So then, a more functional forum.
Martyn mentioned something but I can't remember what it was. I don't think any of us really think phpBB is viable so then discuss.

If it's email notification on replies to threads you want, then you can do that on here!
I was under the impression that people wanted email notification every time anything was posted on the forum (but IMHO that defeats the entire point of a forum!).
Anyway, to get email notifications on reply to threads, you need to
1. Set your user profile to send emails on reply to bookmarked threads (you only need to do this once): - Go to Profile (under the forum name at the top of each page) - Click 'Bookmarks' link (at the top next to 'Member's Bio') - Click 'Click here to manage your bookmarks preferences' link - Select 'Email notification' from the dropdown box - Click 'Update Bookmarks and Preferences' button
2. Bookmark any thread(s) you are interested by using the 'bookmark' button in the header/footer of each thread.
Simples!!

But you can't currently subscribe to threads which aren't yet created in that way. And it doesn't defeat the point of a forum if it actually works - the lug Mailman server keeps not sending out emails properly. It also gives the choice of what you subscribe to - everything or just certain topics. And it gives a nicer archive than the standard mailman mail archive.
Another request was for RSS subscriptions alongside email ones because many people prefer reading things in RSS format to getting them in email.
